A story of resilience and magic: BNAAA, where the soul of mezcal meets the legacy of Oaxaca.
There is a story that has been told for centuries from the birthplace of mezcal, Santiago de Matatlán, Oaxaca—the legend of BNAAA.
Legend has it that a Zapotec woman named BNAAA, a beautiful and mystical figure, began using the juice from the Espadín agave. She discovered its magical healing properties and its ability to connect her to the spirit world of her ancestors.
In a dream, her ancestors taught her how to ferment the juice of the Espadín agave. BNAAA then began selling this new elixir, which she called Mezcal, meaning “fermented juice” in Zapotec. However, many of her customers honored her by calling it BNAAA.
BNAAA realized her spirit needed to be shared as the Spanish Conquistadores would kill their culture and more kill them. BNAAA offered a bottle to Generalissimo Nacho Cortes. Soon Cortes fell in love with BNAAA, the spirit and the lady BNAAA. Thereafter, Cortes discovered that the mezcal BNAAA served made them joyous, spiritual, and unwilling to continue conquering and fighting the people and tribes in Oaxaca. Soon, the Conquistadors changed their minds, laid down their weapons, and built churches and universities for the people of Oaxaca.
Today, Oaxaca blends Spanish, Mexican, and Zapoteco culture, evident in the food, art, and the most recognized Oaxacan product—mezcal. Many argue that mezcal should be called BNAAA. Today, it means “Lady” or a woman of wisdom, cunning, strength, and style.
BNAAA Mezcal is crafted by a husband and wife distilling team, Poncho and Elisa Perez. As sixth-generation master distillers, they are uniquely the only married team in the world. They distill using the time-honored traditions and secrets that Lady BNAAA followed centuries ago. Today, BNAAA Mezcal maintains the tradition that the legendary Lady BNAAA instilled, preserving the character, smoothness, and culture in every sip.
